I added this manga to my list AGES ago because I got a free poster of it a some convention. I kept putting it off because it looked like one of those really stupid childish animes that lead people to believing anime is for kids. Well, really it probably is aimed for kids..... but I must confess, I like it.
The story is about an useless boy named Ginta. He can't do anything with his life, poor vision, below average grades and dreadful at sport. He spends all his time playing video games or dreaming. Ginta has reccuring dreams about the world of Märchen (fairy tale in German) with fairies and talking trees. His dreams of Märchen become more and more common until one day he is invited into the world of his dreams with fairies and talking trees. In this world Ginta is a completely different person. He can run fast and for longer and is stronger than the average resident of Märchen. But soon Märchen is threatened by the Chess no Korma and Ginta's love for Märchen means he can't just watch it be destroyed, he decides he has to fight! By teaming up with the friends he meets and training vigorously Ginta forms the new group against the Chess no Korma: MAR.
The plot is mostly as simple as that... MAR fights the Chess no Korma and get stronger as they go along. But there are other more interesting parts in it! Like the connection between the two worlds, the history of Märchen and may be a bit of romance (it's a kids manga so don't get your hopes up). Really the plot is lovely! Although it's simple the whole concept of it is so novel that it doesn't need to be any more complex! Despite the on-going flow of fight scenes it doesn't get boring because all the fight scenes are so unique!
Although the character's big hair and simplistic clothing do give off the impression of a child's story book they are a lot nicer in the book! They are pretty and the various weapons are genius! The fight scenes were drawn really well, so everything flowed nicely! But most importantly, everything was cute!
For a kids manga it's actually quite deep! Most the 'bad guys' aren't so obviously bad, all of them have their reasons to be fighting! The best part is that they don't turn these in to sob story's, some of the Chess no Korma actually state that they are fighting because they enjoy killing! It's so much fun to read all the different reasons to fight! The good characters are interesting too! Although Ginta is fairly transparent, the other people are a lot more fun!
You really should read this! It is entirely possible for a child to read this and just read a bunch of fight scenes and a strong sense of justice, but you could also read a really interesting story, where all the characters have points in their lives and the good and the bad aren't quite so obvious. It's also quite cute!
