Kuro Shitsuji Movie

I heard news about this movie a year ago and since it's release in January I've been keeping an eye out for a subbed version.
Although this movie is a part of the Black Butler franchise, it is not necessary to be acquainted with the story to understand the movie. The movie is basically based in an alternate dimension where the names are different and the main character is a cross-dressing girl. More on that later. The movie is about Shiori Genpou and her butler, Sebastian Michaelis, who serve as the Queen's 'Watchdogs', detectives for the weird and supernatural. So when mummified bodies start to turn up, Shiori immediately starts investigating. But things don't go well when her investigations leads her to a private party where she's caught snooping around. Fortunately she has Sebastian who is more than just a butler, he's 'one hell of a butler': a demon who serves Shiori in exchange for her soul. The pair need to have all their wits about them if they are to survive and solve the mystery.
The plot is really clever. Its full of redherrings but every detail is carefully explained in various flashbacks. Its really rather in depth actually and everything is explained. I quite often find stories like this difficult to keep up with and yet I followed this movie with relative ease. Although that may actually mean that the story is terrible and too straight forward, it makes me happy and that's what matters in the end!
I remember the original anime being very humorous and at times utterly ridiculous. This movie is not like this. It focuses a lot more on the action instead. Not that I can really complain! The action scenes are all beautifully choreographed. Considering Sebastian can technically take out all the enemies in the blink of an eye, I really appreciate the fact that they actually made these spectacular fight scenes. They really make the movie in my opinion. Also, it's quite gory at times, but its classy and well done gore and only actually adds to the story rather than detracting. But I really don't know how to feel about the new names and the fact that the new protagonist is a girl. It does feel like they strayed to far from the original source. Especially since is adds nothing to the story! However, it doesn't really cause any problem either.
One thing I did have a problem is though is that they couldn't devote themselves to one time period. The original Black Butler story was set very clearly in Victorian England. This movie isn't quite so obvious about because although the characters wear Victorian clothing, almost identical to what they wear in the original show! But there's modern cars and an incredibly advanced looking bomb. However it must be said that they really rocked those costumes. They are as beautiful as the original designs. Incredibly detailed and carefully constructed. They're perfect!
However, I am incredibly impressed by the casting! Ayame Goriki has the air of authority and nonchalance that matches Shiori's/Ciel's personality and Hiro Mizushima has a tall build and deep voice befitting of Sebastian! I am particularly pleased with Mizuki Yamamoto who plays Rin, the clumsy maid. In the anime I remember her for her distinctive voice which would squeak like a boy hitting puberty. Something that Mizuki manages to imitate in such a way that its still reminiscent of the original character but with the control necessary to fit the more serious tone of the movie.
In conclusion, I am happy I finally found this! It's the best film I've watched in a while actually! The plot is carefully created and the actors give their all to representing their characters. I am slightly disappointed that some of the best characters did not get realised in the movie but in the end I'd rather have a clever plot than a story bent around showing off as many characters as possible. As long as you're prepared for a less funny Black Butler, you will love this movie! It has a brilliant balance of violence and intelligence that I think any one could appreciate! So why are you still sitting there? Go watch the movie!

Young Miss Holmes

Have you seen the links I've added along the side? As my number of reviews increases I figured I should make it easier to navigate around. Please do have a click around and tell me if you found them helpful! Anyway, it's been a while, but I'm reviewing a manga today!
I'm sure you've already worked out that the manga is connected to Sherlock Holmes, famous Consulting Detective of 221B. The manga is from the point of view of Crystal "Christie" Hope, 10 year old prodigy from a privileged family and Sherlock Holmes' niece. Having being left in the care of her maids while her parents are in India, Christie's curiosity leads her from one dangerous adventure to another. She has deduction skills greater than Watson but diminutive next Sherlock's. So Christie tries to increase her knowledge by trying to solve her Uncles cases and assist him in catching the criminal. It takes much of it's story from the original Doyle books just with added characters and some plot twists. The book starts with Sherlock solving the case of a stolen diamond when Christie comes by for a visit. This gives her a chance to show the readers her deductive powers, courageous personality and kick-ass maids. It was a perfect introduction to the story! But unfortunately  it didn't really go anywhere from there. The addition of new characters has to actually add something positive to the overall book for it to be worthwhile but Christie is just another person with skills in deduction. There is also no added plot, underlying or side! Or, at least for now, no character development. The characters introduced do not really add anything to the original book. So, yes the plot is brilliant, it's essentially Doyle, so I can't give author Kaoru Shintani any credit for it really.

The Most Beautiful Death in the World (Kuroshitsuji Musical)

Did you know that the Japanese turn some anime and manga into musicals? No, I didn't either. (UN)Fortuantately I was set homework about musicals and when my research lead to the discovery of a Kuroshitsuji you can understand my interest. Now, I share this interest with you.
The plot is obviously derived from the original manga, Ceil loses his parents and his greatly humiliated so he summons a demon to help him get revenge. This help comes in the form of the super-butler Sebastian. (Read my Kuroshitsuji Review for a longer summary.) But the actual story of the muscial is not quite like any of the anime episodes, but more of a mix of some of the best moments with a unique twist. Ceil is ordered by the Queen to investigate the mysterious deaths of young ladies in London. Meanwhile in the Dispatch Management Headquarters every one's having to work overtime as the number of souls is not equal to the number of deaths. So also investigating these mysterious deaths are three shinigami and a Inspector from Scotland Yard. With all this murder and mystery, there is a love line too between the shinigami! There was also a tonne of humour!! Just as enjoyable and intriguing as the anime, in fact, in some ways better with the addition of gay shinigami and slapstick policemen! The plot may be re-using a lot of ideas from the manga, but it's still very fresh and surprising!!

Elfen Lied

Sorry this review isn't very good... I really didn't get my own thoughts.... And I've been busy.... So apologies!
This series is hard.... Not that I didn't like it.... But to explain why I like is difficult.....
After watching episode one I almost stopped watching it completely! It's full of blood and nudity!!
The opening scene consists of a lady, who is chained up with nothing but a helmet on her head! After escaping her chains, she starts pulling the guards apart - limb from limb - with her telekinetic powers! Through out the lab guards try to stop her, but she just pulls of their heads, arms and legs.... And those sound effects! The crunching bones the squelching blood.... they made my skin-crawl! Then she, Lucy, got shot and fell in to the ocean and gets washed up at a beach with Kouta and his cousin, Mayu. It's so ecchi!!
But after the shocking first episode, it becomes highly entertaining! Nyuu starts living with Kouta and Mayu, then they pick up the little runaway girl, and they are all living happily! It's so cute! Nyuu is so adorable, a bit freaky at times... but adorable! But her character has much more depth, her split personality Lucy and her connection to Kouta has yet to be thoroughly explained, and I'm looking forward to it!!

Kuro Shitsuji (Black Butler)

I've been meaning to watch this anime for AGES!!! Loads of my friends have watched it, and everyone of them loved it. Well I can't blame them. It is a good anime!!
It covers a whole range of genres making it hard to pinpoint specific pros and cons, but it still has a fairly distinguished plot. Although the opening scene is very strange and confusing, it does explain itself as the anime moves on. It's based in England, which makes a change because instead of referencing strange sounding Japanese culture and traditions, it clearly portrays England in the Victorian times. It is very accurate as well, and includes lots of tea and cakes and all the cakes are clearly named with a picture of them (of course).
Ciel Phantomhive, a young boy who found himself as head of his family after his house burnt down with his parents still inside. Now he's an Earl with two 'jobs': head of the Phantomhive toy company and 'guard dog' for Queen Victoria. However, he does not do this alone, he gets Sebastian -the 'Black Butler'- to do all the hard work. Sebastian is everything you could ever ask for in a butler. He cooks, he cleans, he prepares his masters schedule, and of course he fights like a ninja! No flaws appear in Sebastian' duties, he really is "one hell of a Butler". Or you can just call him Ciel's personal Demon.

Eden of The East

An extremely short but much loved anime that I borrowed from a friend. It's strange, funny and romantic. But it has it's fair share of negatives...
The world of Eden of the East isn't far off from our world; it includes things like terroism, NEETs and 9/11. Despite all that this show does not showcase the violence and explosions as a main part of the anime. It's full of misunderstandings, mysteries and unknown people which should bring you right to the edge of your seat. But I didn't really work for me; I felt more drawn to the romance between the two main characters. You'd think that with all that going on squeezing any jokes in would be an impossible task. But no, Eden of the East also pulls of a fairly exaggerated sense of humour between the scenes!
The pacing was great, especially as it only had 11 episodes. You slowly learn things: the Selecao game, Mr.Outside, the Eden of the East website and to climax this steady flow of information is Akira's past.
