Psycho-Pass

In a not-so distant future, every body is kept under strict surveillance. Even their mental stability is measured by a 'Psycho-Pass' making it possible to detect criminals sometimes before they commit a crime! The series focuses on Akane a young over-achiever who joined the police force as an Inspector. An Inspector's job is too hunt criminals with a team of Enforcers whose mental state has been deemed too unstable for society. They use automated guns which read a person's mental state or "Crime Coefficiency" and will only fire on people who are unstable. It's a fish-out-of-water type tale where Akane is constantly shocked by the way things work in her department. Fortunately Enforcer Kogami is always around to explain things to her but she can't grasp the concept of killing criminals or keeping her distance from the Enforcers even after she finds out that Kogami used to be an Inspector. In one particularly cruel case Akane and Kogami must find the criminal responsible for dissecting young girls' bodies and turning them into disturbing pieces of 'art' and putting them on display.

It's an incredibly involved plot set in a completely unique world with a new society and all. Everything works in conjunction to make an entirely convincing sci-fi world. Akane's job is as alien to us as it is to her so it really feels like a journey: we're learning new stuff and taking out the bad guys together! She's very easy to empathise with so her ignorance is not a hindrance to the story. It would be all too easy (and still entertaining) to send Akane on a series of meaningless investigations but I can already sense something big brewing in the shadows! There's also the character development! Seeing Kogami begin to trust Akane and watching Akane learn more about how the police works is as entertaining as the plot!
But Akane's character is not atypical of a fish-out-of-water story: her innocence and naivety make the injustice of the system more prominent. I do enjoy her consistent attempts at making friends and staying cheerful but she's just a convention in the end. Kogami is still a very mystifying character even though he is the only one with any back story. He is mostly very hardworking and is much more competent than Akane but his hansome brooding makes him a character of interest. There are a lot more characters which have much more interesting personalities. But they are never explored at all almost as though they only exist to fuel character and plot development for our two leading characters. Which is such a shame because Akane and Kogami are so conventional! I'd much rather hear more about Shuusei who had a dangerous crime coefficient at age 5!
There is some spectacular animation! The transforming guns and dramatic driving scenes are not only fluid but are captured at some very attractive angles. There's also a lot of attention to detail: people in the corners of scenes refelections in glass. Little additions to the anime make it a show worth watching properly. Not out of the corner of your eye or anything like that!! The art style does let it down a bit though. Maybe it's just my shojo heart that calls out for cute characters with big eyes but I do not like how Akane looks every one else is fine but Akane just looks really odd and since she's the main character I really feel like it lets the show down a bit.
I think it's wonderful how this anime has not only created a new world which could turn your views upside down but all the tiny details of this world which are meticulously recorded. More than the specific plot I fin adventuring this alien world to be much more exciting! Then, if you are interested in disturbed criminals, all the better because these criminal are all monstrously twisted! I have a few qualms about the art style and some of the characters are annoyingly underrated but that can't detract from the show because it's not really about the people. This is a show about society and technology. I may have not enforced that idea until now but it's a highly provoking series about the treatment of criminals and dependence on technology; and that is something I can give pie too!!

(Well, the trailer is spoiler free at aleast!)
