Gatchaman Crowds

I've been so busy lately I almost forgot to write today's post! So if this review sounds rushed, it's because it was! Sorry, hopefully it will still be entertaining to read!
In 1972 anime had their own western-style superhero show: Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. Focused on environmentalism and responsible use of technology the series centered around five superhero ninjas who needed to fight off a terrorist group who wanted to take over the world. Skip to 2013 and the Gatchaman Franchise is producing it's fifth production based Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.
Set in the near future of Japan Legendary heroes known as Gatchaman are responsible for protecting the world from aliens whilst simultaneously keeping their existence a secret. Hajime is chosen to become a Gatchaman with her senpai from school Sugane and several others to form the G-Crew. But Hajime isn't interested in destroying aliens, she's more concerned about 'updating' the world, a concept introduced by the GALAX program. GALAX is a mobile 'game' where people have to complete missions in the real world. It unites people who all want to improve the world and help each other it's an amazing concept which I'm finding a lot more interesting than fighting aliens!

So although I haven't seen a lot of this anime yet it clearly has potential and a spectacular feel-good factor! But back to the Gatchaman themselves!
They are individually chosen by JJ for their latent powers. He appeared to Hajime and produced a notebook from her. Once she finds Sugane, fellow Gatchaman, he takes her to their leader Paiman who explains everything to her. The notebook is called a NOTE and is the physical form of their souls and the source of their alien fighting powers.Using their NOTEs they can cast 'amnesia effect' to make themselves invisible to civilians then transform into their mecha-style fighting gear with their individual weapons.
In the style of their predecessors (the original Gatchamen), each member has their own G-number.Startinf with Hajime Ichinose: G-101. She's an eccentric character who lives in her own world. She's a newest member of the G-crew but quickly works out how to fight. Her costume looks rather silly but her fighting style is totally awesome! She fights with various scissors and other stationary items. It sounds a bit weird but it's so novel you have to love it! Hajime is supposed to let Sugane take charge but her unique outlook on life means she often disobeys is orders. Her energetic nature means she often acts recklessly but her positivity often makes things work out in the end. Her positivity is stunning and is bound to leave you with a smile on your face. She's a beautiful character whose flaws only make her more perfect!
Sugane Tachibana is G-96. He's been in G-crew for five years and can't understand Hajime's unconventional attitude. He is a very straight-laced boy but soon finds himself dragged into Hajime's chaotic way of life. I'm sure there'll be a love line forming here as Sugane begins to understand Hajime and see the world the way she sees it. Or at least I hope there'll be a love line, because it'll be 100% adorable! Sugane's Gatchaman form is modelled after a swan and he fights with a samurai sword. Nothing too exciting, but cool nevertheless!
There's also G-89, Joe, the dark mysterious one who always appears to be in deep thought. Over than that, I don't really know anything about him! G-12, O.D, who is almost as eccentric as Hajime. These two understand each other immediately and O.D easily takes Hajime's new idea's for his own. G-99 is Utsu-tsu who doesn't say much other than her catchphrase 'I'm gloomy' which is a pun on her name. She doesn't really open up to people easily but Hajime's lively nature makes it difficult for her not to join in! She's incredibly cute and has beautiful long green hair tied up with a a lovely large yellow bow.
The art and animation is lovely! Every one looks adorable and unique. Details like eye shape and head shape have been thought through to match the characters. And the psychedelic light show that happens whenever they take their Gatchaman forms is perfectly animated. The same goes for the perfectly fluid fight scenes as well! There is one thing I dislike though: their hair. Most anime characters have shine on their hair, that's not a problem. But in Gatchaman Crowds their heads have whole spirals of shine! Spirals. Really? It just looks silly and really distracts me from the otherwise quality animation and art! Sigh.
So in sudden conclusion (because it's almost 12:00 and I'm still writing) Gatchaman Crowds is a good anime. It doesn't seem to rely on Science Ninja Team Gatchaman at all (or at least no yet) and has plenty of it's own merits. Including a really awesome soundtrack which is always a good way to top off an anime. The plot is good and whichever route it takes I'm sure it'll be awesome. There are relationships within the G-crew to be built, GALAX missions to be completed and aliens to be stopped. It's a really good show and definitely worth a watch. I just wish I could've spent more time reviewing it to give it better credit.
