My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute

Based off a Light Novel by Tsukasa Fushimi, My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute (Oreimo for short) is about a brother and sister relationship that's bordering on incestual. Kirino is s.mart, athletic and pretty and totally overshadows her older brother, Kyosuke. As such, the two have never really got along. But Kirino does have a secret behind her model student exterior: she's actually a hardcore otaku with a preference for magical girl anime and little sister eroge (erotic games). Kyosuke finds out about his sister's 'hobby' and being the kind brother that he is decides to help Kirino sort the rift between her personal life and her love of anime. Kyosuke continues to take unreasonable measures to help out his sister and she continues to abuse him. It's just a silly comedy.

I love the concept! Love it! Girl trying to keep her otaku side secret but guy finds out about it the two end up in hilariously awkward situations because of it. Doesn't that sound fun? But there are so many things wrong with it! Pacing, consistency and characters. So the good plot is ruined and the only redeeming features are the body gags and spontaneous moments of witty humor. It's funny, but it's just not a good series! Allow me elaborate: both the inconsistency and the poor pacing can be demonstrated by looking at episodes 7-9. Episode 7, Kirino is looking for inspiration for a book she's writing to put forward to a potential editor. The idea of her book is mocked by the anime and in the previous episode her writing style is clearly flawed so of course we don't expect much from this book. Episode 8, Kirino's book is being turned into an anime. That's right, with no development on Kirino writing the book and no progress into it being a best seller, just straight in with her getting an anime. I don't see how pacing can be any worse than that. As for inconsistency, look a episode. We can assume Kirino's anime has aired, but it's only an assumption because nobody ever mentions it again. Ever. Getting your own anime is a pretty big deal and yet no one cares? It's exactly as though that whole episode was ignored! Inconsistent? Check.
Most the fault lays with Kirino's character. She's the ultimate tsundere, completely rubbish at expressing how she really feels. Nothing wrong with that, I love tsunderes! But you know, a tsundere only becomes 'dere' (the cute part) when in love. Kirino is tsundere to her brother! It's not a love line, I know, it's not really anything more than the love a brother and sister should share, but the hints at incest are way too common for me - as a sister to three - to feel comfortable. Why did she her preference have to be for little sisters? She is a little sister herself and yet she plays all these little sister eroge? I know that it's because she thinks their cute, but still, it's just gross! And what's with all the 'dating'. When they're together, not only does every one assume they're on a date but at one point Kirino actually asks for a date for 'research'. What's with this incestual world?!?
Incest aside, I haven't finished complaining about Kirino. Her personality is ridiculously annoying! She too 'perfect' for her own good! She's the center of her friendship group and works as a model, seriously? She gets top grades and is a good enough athlete to be invited to study abroad? It just gets more ridiculous really! But simultaneously, she's a totally rotten child who should've been taught better manners. She only once thanks her brother, the rest of the time she hits him and calls him names. It's abusive and totally out of order! It makes me so mad to see Kyosuke treated like that!
Which brings me to the next problem: Why is Kyosuke such a push over? He's not doing any one any favors by letting her run wild like that! He has no personality aside from helping his sister. No hobbies or interests of his own. Just a complete push-over! There's not enough to him for me to even write a paragraph on!
In all honesty I don't want to give this anime a bad rating. The first episode just had so much potential in it! It was novel and comedic - still a bit incestual... But oh so entertaining! Where did all that go? Got stuck in the light novel, maybe? I don't want to give up on the concept but in truth, this is a bad anime with terrible characters!
