Kill La Kill

I came across this anime in a very abnormal circumstances! I read a news article about a cosplayer who drew the attention of the police at an anime event in Singapore. Apparently an older woman was offended by the cosplayers 'underboob' and an arguement ensued. After digging around a bit I became quite intrigued by the costume. So, when it came to deciding what to write about for this weeks review, the answer came about too easily!

The anime itself is all about Ryoko's journey to get revenge on her fathers murderer. The only clue she has is her giant scissor blade; whoever posses the other matching scissor blade murdered her father. When the anime is set, Ryoko has arrived at Honnouji Academy - a High School with a strong hierarchical system based on strength. If you prove yourself worthy by defeating enough of your classmates, you receive a 'Goku Uniform' a uniform with life fibers that enhance your strength and abilities. The one in charge of such a violent school is Satsuki, the Student Council President. She's also the one who holds the information on Ryoko's father's murder. Fortunately, Ryoko has a weapon more powerful than a Goku Uniform. A Kamui, made entirely of life fibers, it has a personality of it's own and transforms into something really quite vulgar! So with Kamui's power, Ryoko goes about defeating all the club presidents in order to get close to Satsuki with support for her 'no-star' friend Mako.
I am absolutely loving this plot. It's very different to what I usually watch and it's not exceptionally well-crafted. It's straight-forward and mostly quite predictable. So what do I love about it? I love it's simplicity, it's humour, it's fight scenes and it's creativity. With a plot like this. It would be way to easy to take the 'moster-a-week' format, but Kill La Kill is nothing as boring as that. Also, it's very reminiscent of old-school 80's anime, such as Project A-Ko, and I can't help but love that retro feel!
The feature that makes this anime seem like it's in the wrong time is the art style. Although the people don't look quite as ridiculous, there is definitely an old school feel. The rough lines sketchy lines and occasionally stiff animation are better than any 80's anime but the animation uses the same techniques! Then there's character design which is undeniably retro! All of the ridiculous costumes which are supposed to enhance one's power are totally laughable! The Displinary Commitee's chair is supposed to be a large man but he's drawn with such inconsistency that sometime's he's just tall, whilst over times he's a larger-than-life giant! Then there's those super-revealing Kamui uniforms. The level of fan service is totally 80's! Panty shots, jiggly boob shots and plenty of opportunities for the already revealing costumes to go just a step further! This anime is definitely not kid friendly but the fan service is nothing but comedic!
I think my favorite thing in this show is the characters! There are characters that play off the 80's convention but they're all a little bit more. For example: we are all aware of the typical high school who has to run to school then sleeps in lessons; Mako takes this idea one step further, she doesn't doze off in class, she guzzles down her lunch and passes out at her desk! Great big snooze bubble and all. That's not even the end of Mako's irregularities! She has a habit of making rushed speeches with crazy actions that don't always match up with what she's saying. Even in the face of death, she's lively and optimistic in the most stupid way. And I absolutely love her. She could steal the show and I wouldn't even mind because behind all her eccentric ways she's clearly a thoughtful and caring girl!
Alas, I am neglecting our leading lady: Ryoko. She pales in comparison to Mako but she's not a weak character! She's violent but considerate and she really cares for Mako and her family! I don't know quite why she's so obsessed with avenging her father when the two didn't even get along but her determination is admirable. Also, since she's such a bad ass fighter you can ignore the fact that she doesn't really have any reason to be fighting.
In the end, Kill La Kill is pretty out there and it could well be just too much for the general populace. However, I stand by my opinion, that it is a great anime and I'm in some ways thankful for that woman who complained about the revealing nature of this shows outfits, lest I wouldn't have found it! The fight scenes are just way too epic and everything has been super sized.  It's brilliant! Also, it's hilariously funny! It makes fun of it's self, I swear. The animation took some getting used to, but I totally love it now! And as long as Mako doesn't die I will absolutely adore this anime.
