Brown Eyed Girls - Sixth Sense

More Korean CD reviews!! I really hope you don't mind these!!
Brown Eyed Girls are a 4 member girl group. They are under a smaller label name, NegaNetwork. This means their music is quite different to the big names in K-pop. You can hear this difference just by listening to their Intro song "Swing It Shorty". It has a interesting drum beat and a repetitive bass line and a standard through out the 1:21, but the rest of the song is completely unpredictable! The collision of humming and singing by the members almost make it sound like their in a jam session! In fact, upon releasing the album the agency did state that this is music no other girl group can imitate.
None of their songs are particularly electro and most feature a variety of brass instruments. The only track that has obviously has a synthesiser in it is Love Motion. Although no matter how much the song sounds like a remix they style sing in the same soulful style that they have through out the album!

The title track is great! Sixth sense is such a powerful song! With trumpets, violins, drums and saxaphones you would think that the girls voices might be a bit overwhelmed, but no! Their voices just sound like a part of the orchestra, not amplified over the music and not covered up, they are placed right in the middle. If you listen to the instrumental you can really hear how much depth and detail has been put into the song and then when you hear the girls singing you can hear their emotions! Not only is Sixth Sense amazing instrumentally and emotionally, it also shows a lot of talent. One member hits a note higher than I thought humanly possible which then leads on an amazing fast rap! It is probably one of my favourite K-pop songs! And that is one hell of a compliment!
Sixth Sense has a very unique style, and although all the tracks sound different you can tell they all tie together. All the songs are trying to push boundaries and venture in to fairly unexplored sounds, especially for a K-pop group. Quite a lot of the songs sound like an unexplored jungles and have really interesting percussion parts. Like Hot Shot, which combines the exotic percussion with some classic jazz and unique vocals. Vendetta is quite similar, but uses a standard drum kit with lots of cymbals, but I prefer Vendetta because the music is more.. interactive... or something like that. It also has a really curious bridge and rap. I really like the call and response part... basically it's all good!!
But I think my favourite track has to be countdown. The start is absolutely delicious.  Unaccompanied but still powerful, and the voice sounds really pure and untouched. You can hear the slight 'growls' in her voice and her gasps for breath. Then when the other voice come in with the music. The odd rhythms that shouldn't fit but do! Then the saxophone at the end! The only problem is that it's too short! But you HAVE to listen to it! Greatest vocals EVER!
Lastly we have Brown Eyed Girls two laid back tracks. Unlike most K-pop CD's they don't have an average ballad track, instead they've gone for more of a soul sound. Both tracks have a very simple beats and meaningful singing. An Inconvenient Truth is my favourite of the two. It is the most like a ballad and starts with subdued sing with a piano, but quickly adds a drum beat a bass part and strings. It's quite climatic but sounds so heartbroken, love it! The other track is La Boheme and has more interesting sounds like pops and finger clicks. Lots of over-lapping singing and interesing stuff. But in general it's the most normal of their songs.
I really love this album despite the awkward size it came in. The album case could really lose some weight as it really is an unnecessary size. I know they like to put pictures and picture booklets in the albums, but the picture booklet is a lot smaller than the album! Although I wouldn't mind if they made the booklet  bigger instead because there's some really good photos in there! Although I found the black and white ones rather plain, the ones taken with loads of folige are awesome. Not only do the leaves fit the jungle sounding music they also add some great tones of green! So in general Brown Eyed Girls are amazing. Great voices, great music, great emotion, great MV's, great looks. They just need a chance to dance and they'd be perfect! It's a shame they don't get noticed because they're under a small label... but I quite like how they're aren't overly known.
