Mirai Nikki

Dark and sinister, cruel and deceptive. Think of a mash-up between Death Note and Eden of the East. Although, instead of Gods of Death, the leader, so to speak, of this show is the God of time and space. So, this God resides in the head of a young boy, Yuki. Yuki can't get along with other people so instead he spends all his time on his phone making a diary about everything that happens around him. For his entertainment, the God of time and space gives his diary the power to see into future. In fact, 12 people each with different diaries, can now see into the future and are set the mission of killing or destroying each other's diaries. So, a battle-royale kind of scenario breaks out. It's a really interesting story because every one has different diaries so can see different parts of the past. Like Gasai Yuno, who made a diary post every 10 minutes about what Yuki was doing, now she can see every that Yuki is going to do. Now, with Yuki and Yuno allied they need to beat all the other diary holders. But with lies and deception around every corner Yuki struggles and owes his life to Yuno many times. It has got gore in it, but only when necessary, it's mostly a psychological thriller. And a very good one at that! The complete freaks and the background stories and I especially love all the unexpected twists.

The art is stunning!! they really thought about the darkness of the anime and incorporated it into the art. The eerie shadows are pitched just right and the insane eyes look very convincing! There are also some pretty impressive camera panning! Lots of demented contortions and abstract art too! Everything you need to draw a dark anime with!!
The characters are hypnotic! Each with their own motives and stories. The development of Yuki is especially interesting as he slowly becomes less introverted. Watching him make friends then crumble under pressure then try piece himself back together, it's very exciting!! But Yuno is easily my favourite character, the way she suddenly switches between cute and innocent and a deadly axe killer and also, her undying devotion to Yuki that's still shrouded in mystery. But really, all the diary owners are interesting, watching each of them come and go with their own story and their own battle plan, the variety is immense! Truly brilliant! Complete insanity!
I know I've said before that I don't really like horror and gore anime, but this is a masterpiece!!! A plot that is intricate but not complex, characters that are in-depth but not melo-dramatic. The gore and horror are there, but play a small part in making this scary! It's one of the few animes that I can't predict what's going to happen in, which is just shocking really!! Brilliant are, brilliant characters, brilliant plot. This is truly the best anime I've watched in a while!
